A new melee weapon in Left 4 Dead 2 has been revealed:

And it is... )

Well, I guess I can finally announce this!

I have been cast as the Twelfth Doctor! Now, I just have to wait for Matt Smith to finish his run and I'll be traveling the universe, fighting Daleks in no time!

"It feels different this time..."

Eighth Doctor

My main criticism with the classic Doctor Who story, The Caves of Androzani (Besides that awful Magma Monster) has always been the companions' and the Master's heads circling around the Fifth Doctor before his regeneration. Well, someone apparently felt the same way and personally reworked the regeneration scene to remove them. I like this approach better. Hey, it guarantees that the Fifth Doctor's final words are not "Adric?"

In anticipation of the upcoming downloadable content for it, I decided to play a little Saints Row 2. I made my character look like David Tennant. I was even able to do a pretty good job recreating his Doctor Who costume. It's kinda strange seeing the Tenth Doctor doing some very un-Doctor like things. Still, I guess it's not as out of character as some other creations players have come up with (Someone's gonna go to Hell for that one).

And the Eleventh Doctor is...

Matt Smith!

I have to admit, I've never heard of this guy before. I guess that could be considered a blessing, since I'll have no preconceived notions about what kind of Doctor he'll be.

Base on this photo, I have two reservations.

1) His costume is a little too similar to Christopher Ecleston's.

2) He look a little too emo. Come to think of it, he looks a lot like that vampire from the Twilight movie.

Still, I'll reserve judgment until his episodes actually air. As the Seventh Doctor told Ace, "Time will tell. It always does."

Christmas with a Dalek?

I found this novelty song, "I'm Gonna Spend My Christmas With A Dalek," recorded by The Go-Gos (Not the 80's girl group) in the 60's. I heard a snippet of this before (I think it was on Doctor Who: the Hartnell Years). The small amount I heard caused me to block it out for over a decade.

Well, thanks to Neil Gaiman, I rediscovered it and got to hear the whole thing for the first time. And there are three majoe problems with it.

1) The song is fucking horrible.

2) The Dalek voice doesn't sound much like a Dalek.

3) Daleks don't want to be your friend, let alone spend Christmas with you. Daleks are nothing but evil blobs of hate in metal casings who want to kill every thing that isn't a Dalek and enslave the universe.''

Somebody should've exterminated this song.

Here a Doctor, there a Doctor

David Tennant will be playing Hamlet this July. At Neil Gaiman's blog, he thought he'd get a head start on the inevitable Doctor Who as Hamlet jokes:

"To be, or not to be, that is the question. Weeelll.... More of A question really. Not THE question. Because, well, I mean, there are billions and billions of questions out there, and well, when I say billions, I mean, when you add in the answers, not just the questions, weeelll, you're looking at numbers that are positively astronomical and... for that matter the other question is what you lot are doing on this planet in the first place, and er, did anyone try just pushing this little red button?"

It had me thinking about how slightly jarring it is for me to see a Doctor in a non-Doctor role. Here are the ones I can remember seeing:

Patrick Troughton in The Omen.

Jon Pertwee in an episode of The Avengers.

Tom Baker in The Golden Voyage of Sinbad and an episode of Blackadder. He also voiced a role in the Warren Ellis-penned video game Cold Winter.

Peter Davison in the TV series All Creatures Great and Small.

Colin Baker in an episode of Blake's 7.

Sylvester McCoy in a sketch in The Secret Policeman's Ball.

Paul McGann in Withnail & I.

Christopher Eccleston in the movie Jude and the TV shows Cracker and Heroes.

David Tennant also had one of those blink-and-you'll-miss-him appearances in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I don't remember seeing him, so I guess I must've blinked.

The other day, I got an email from Amazon. They're offering a $50 credit for all of us poor saps who bought an HD-DVD player from them! Makes me feel somewhat better about my purchase. They could've just as easily said, "Screw you, you should've known what you might be getting into." I still haven't decided what I'm gonna buy with it. Maybe I'll get a Blu-Ray DVD.

I watched the U.S. premiere of season 4 of Doctor Who Friday night. Probably the most gripping Christmas episode I've ever seen. The kept thinking the story was sort of a cross between The Robots of Death meets The Poseidon Adventure. Really impressive set designs and visual effects. The show's come a long way from the days of rubber-suited monsters and styrofoam sets.

I am the God of Innsmouth!

Okay boys and girls, let's begin with my trip to the comic book store today! I braved 85 degree weather to walk there and in retrospect, wearing a black t-shirt might not have been such a good idea.

Y: The Last Man #57
Runaways #27
Countdown #43
American Virgin #16
Welcome To Tranquility #8
Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter: Guilty Pleasures, Vol. 1

I was thinking of picking up all four issues so far on Loners, but the LCS only had #3. I might have to trade-wait this one.

I immediately sat down and read Y:TLM. I chuckled when Yorick described the cause of the plague to be "vaguely unsatisfying." I read a review for one of the more recent issues where the reviewer said that the big revelation was disappointing and that had all but ruined the series for him. I also smiled at the MST3K reference. Nice to see a fellow MSTie in the comics industry!

Let's turn the Wayback Machine to last December. I had rented a game for my Xbox called Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. As you can probably tell by the title, the game was based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft, most notably The Shadow Over Innsmouth. It was a really good game that also happened to be really true to the source material. Very creepy and atmospheric. Nothing to get you in the mood for the holiday season quite like a bit of Lovecraftian horror! It was a tough game. There was lots of trial-by-error and I died more times than I did in any game since Manhunt. But I was really engrossed by it and I was determined to see it through to the end. However, really late in the game when I was in the Air-Filled Tunnels, there was one boss I just couldn't beat: Robert Marsh. I was armed with only a knife and he kept killing me by either slapping me to death or magically levitating me into the air and choking me, Darth Vader style. I made a billion attempts and read every strategy guide I could get my hands on. I still couldn't kill the fish-faced fucker! I finally, reluctantly gave up and mailed the game back to Gamefly.

Well, I recently uncovered a patch online that had a bunch of cheats on it, including God Mode. Normally, I'd never use cheats during a game, unless I just wanted to screw around. I think the last time I ever used cheats was with the final boss in Bloodrayne, who was damn near impossible to beat without the God Mode cheat. Well, I downloaded the patch and got the PC version of the game. I feel a little guilty about using the God Mode cheat, but it's only as a last resort and I really want to see how it all ends.

So after tonight's glorious double-dose of Doctor Who tonight on the Sci-Fi Channel (I've heard really good things about Season 3), I'm gonna turn the lights out (This game just has to be played in the dark) and play. Look out, Robert Marsh, Jack Walters is coming to kick your ass!
